Meet the Mentors – Nathan – The Hangar
Since the age of six, Nathan, one of The Hangar’s mentors, had one dream: to become a fighter pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force. While studying at the Australian Defence Force Academy, his journey towards his dream was turned upside down. In November 2015, while returning from a training exercise, he was involved in a military bus rollover accident. This left him with multiple injuries, including the amputation of his left hand.
Nathan has since been fitted with a bionic prosthetic hand and continues to set goals and chase his dreams. Although no longer able to become a pilot in the RAAF, he is still chasing his pilot dream, regaining his pilot licence and completing his recreational flight instructor rating. Nathan has been a member of the Australian Invictus Games on two occasions in 2017 and 2018. He has competed in indoor rowing and athletics, medalling in both.
As a result of his experiences, and the mentors that helped him to overcome his injuries and chase his dreams, Nathan has a strong desire to help others through avenues such as motivational speaking and the mentoring programs at The Hangar.
